Using the Group Policy Editor

The Local Group Policy Editor is a very useful tool, using this tool Windows users can modify their operating system. There is a specific setting to disable the Run command from the Start Menu. With the help of the Group Policy editor, you can control the windows settings via a simple user interface. This editor also provides information about that setting which can be helpful before configure it on your computer. Follow the below steps to disable the Run command using the GPE:

Note- If you are using the Windows Home operating system, you have to skip this method. Because the Local Group Policy Editor doesn’t work for the Windows Home Editions. So, make sure before moving forward, you are not using Windows Home Editions.

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key together. Now, type gpedit.msc in the search box area, and then hit the Enter button.

Step 2. Local Group Policy Editor window will open in front of you, navigate the following path in this window-

 User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

Now, from the right side of the window, select the option- “Remove Run Menu from Start Menu” and double click on it.

Step 3. Select the Enable radio button and click on it then click on the OK button.

Step 4. Now, the Run dialog box will not open if you use the shortcut keys or open it or you are trying to open it from the Start Menu.

Note: To re-enable it, click on the disable or not configured in step 3.

Disable run Dialog Box using the Registry Editor

Registry Editor is a hierarchical database and contains all the configurations and settings of Windows. This is used to edit, view, or create new values in the existing database on your computer. Here are the steps to disable Run using this:

Step 1. Open the Run dialog box by pressing Windows + R key together. Now, type Regedit in the search box area, and then hit the Enter button.

Step 2. Now, navigate the following path in the registry editor window:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows

\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

If the explorer key is missing or does not exist, then go to the right side of the window, and select Policies, and make a right-click on it, then select New -> Key and name it as “Explorer.”

Step 3. Do a right-click on the blank area and select New then  DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Step 4. Now, rename the value as NoRun, do a double click on it, and set its value data to 1.

Step 5. Restart your computer to save this change. Restarting your system saves changes in the registry editor. After that, no one can access your Run Command by shortcut or by Strat menu.

Note- To enable it back, just change the value data of NoRun value to 0 or you can simply remove the value from the Registry Editor, this will also enable the Run command on your Windows 10 PC.
