Why Need to Take a backup of registry in Windows 10/8 and 7?

You all know that It contains very sensitive data and windows stored it’s all settings in this registry. So, if you make any mistake then your operating system could corrupt. First of all, you should have taken a backup of the registry key Editor if you never made any changes or don’t have any Idea. 

Where stored on Windows 10?

Now, Windows does not automatically provide a backup of the registry key in the RegBack folder. Although if you will browse the following path i.e- Windows\System32\config\RegBack, you will still see registry hive all will be 0 kb in size.

If you want to recover your system with a corrupt registry hive, then you should use a system restore point. If you want to choose a legacy behavior to recover your system then you have to configure the following registry key and after that restart your computer.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Configuration Manager
\EnablePeriodicBackup

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 1

Now after restarting your system, you have to create a RegIdleBackup task to manage subsequent backups. This task has the following properties:

How to Backup Restore Registry in Windows 10?

Follow these steps to get backup Restore Registry in Windows 10:

  1. First of all open the Run Dialog Box.
  2. Now type Regedit in the search box.
  3. Now a UAC will prompt in front of you and will ask you to allow the changes in your device, simply click on Yes.
  4. Now select the computer from the left side.
  5. Go to the file and then click on the export.
  6. Have to choose all under the Export Section you have selected.
  7. Now select the location of your choice where you want to save this backup and click on the Save button.
  8. The backup file will save with the extension .reg.

In Windows 8.1 or 8

To get backup Restore Registry in your windows 8 or 8.1 device you need to do following steps:

  1. Open the charm box with the help of the key ‘Window +C’.
  2. Now type Regedit in the search box.
  3. Now a UAC will prompt in front of you and will ask you to allow the changes in your device, simply click on Yes.
  4. Now select the computer from the left side.
  5. Go to the file and then click on the export.
  6. Have to choose all under the Export Section you have selected.
  7. Now select the location of your choice where you want to save this backup and click on the Save button.
  8. The backup file will save with the extension .reg.

To restore the registry using a .reg file on a Windows 8 or 8.10 system, just follow these steps:

  • Open the registry editor and type Regedit in the search box and then click on it when it will appear.
  • Now click on the Import option.
  • Now select the file which you want to restore and click on the open button.
  • Once the process will complete then turn off your computer and then restart it.

In Windows 7

If you are using Windows 7 then you need to follow these steps to backup Restore Registry:

  • Click on the start button.
  • Now type Regedit in the search box.
  • Now a UAC will prompt in front of you and will ask you to allow the changes in your device, simply click on Yes.
  • Now select the computer from the left side.
  • Go to the file and then click on the export.
  • Have to choose all under the Export Section you have selected.
  • Now select the location of your choice where you want to save this backup and click on the Save button.
  • The backup file will save with the extension .reg.
