Enable File Delete Confirmations on Windows 11

Deleting a file in Windows 11 can be surprisingly easy. One wrong click, and a file can move to the Recycle Bin before you even realize what happened. While you can usually restore items from the Recycle Bin, having a confirmation message before deletion gives you an extra chance to catch mistakes.

Windows 11 does not show a delete confirmation dialog by default. However, you can enable one through the Recycle Bin Properties window. 

Once enabled, Windows will ask you to confirm whenever you attempt to delete a file or folder that normally goes to the Recycle Bin.

Look through the options in the Recycle Bin Properties window. You should see a checkbox labeled Display delete confirmation dialog.

If the checkbox is currently empty, delete confirmations are disabled. That means Windows can move a selected file to the Recycle Bin without first asking you to confirm the action.

Click the Display delete confirmation dialog checkbox so a check mark appears inside it. This tells Windows that you want to see a confirmation message before files are moved to the Recycle Bin.

There is no need to change any other option unless you specifically want to adjust how the Recycle Bin handles deleted files.

Step 4: Apply the New Setting

After selecting Display delete confirmation dialog, select Apply. This saves the change without immediately closing the Properties window.

Next, select OK to close Recycle Bin Properties.

The setting should now be active. You do not normally need to restart Windows 11 for the change to take effect. The confirmation dialog should appear the next time you delete an eligible file or folder.

Step 5: Test File Delete Confirmation

Now it is a good idea to test the setting before relying on it.

Open File Explorer and navigate to a location containing a file that you do not mind moving to the Recycle Bin. Right-click the file and select Delete, or select the file and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Windows should display a confirmation dialog asking whether you are sure you want to move the item to the Recycle Bin.

Select Yes if you want to continue deleting the test file. If you do not want to delete it, select No.

If the confirmation dialog appears, the setting is working correctly.

Understand What the Confirmation Applies To

It is important to understand exactly what this feature does. The confirmation setting is primarily designed for files and folders that Windows can move to the Recycle Bin.

It does not provide a universal warning for every possible deletion method. For example, using Shift + Delete bypasses the Recycle Bin and permanently deletes the selected item. Because the file does not go through the normal Recycle Bin process, you should not expect the standard Recycle Bin confirmation setting to protect you from that action.

You should therefore use Shift + Delete carefully, particularly when working with important files.

Turn Delete Confirmations Off When Needed

If you later decide that the confirmation window is slowing down your workflow, you can disable it just as easily.

Go to the desktop, right-click Recycle Bin, and select Properties. Clear the Display delete confirmation dialog checkbox, then select Apply followed by OK.

After that, Windows will return to its previous behavior and will no longer display the standard confirmation prompt before moving eligible deleted items to the Recycle Bin.

This is useful if you regularly delete large numbers of files and are comfortable using the Delete command without an additional warning.
